| This would be the place where I should tell you about my experience, talents and skills, and why you should want to work with me. I do have an interesting background—I’ve been a cinematographer, graphic designer, art director, photographer and had a really strange 13 year stint as a corporate communications management guy, working with the CEO, president, and the other top level executives who ran a Fortune 100 consumer products corporation. It was one of the oddest, most painful, wasteful, wonderful learning experiences of my life. (I spent many, many hours in the corporate jet—who’d a thunk it.) It was also the straw that broke the camel’s back. After that, I became a self employed, full time artist. That was eight years ago and I haven’t missed going into the office, flying on the plane, hobnobbing with the super-rich guys, or even the security of the paycheck, for a single moment. Well, maybe the paycheck is missed sometimes, but not what I had to do to get it.
I call my business John MacLellan Photos & Design but lately I’ve been including my middle initial (K for Kenneth) because I had to use it for my domain name for this site. Uusing the K makes me sound more grown up than I think I am. Also, my father (John F. MacLellan) always wanted me to use it so people could tell us apart and I had to rebel against that. My position was always that people would know it was me because there wouldn’t be any middle initial. Now, he’s dead and I’m using the K. Odd how things work out.
Marketing myself is not my strong suit; most of the work I do comes to me because someone has referred a client based on their experience with me and my work. I’m not getting rich this way, and I don’t have a lot of money in the bank. I’m even a little bit picky about who I’ll work with and what I’ll do—it’s not because of some sort of moral/ethical thing, it’s just about chemistry. I’ve come to rely on my intuitive thinking more now that I’m solidly planted in middle age. It’s usually not wrong and I’m generally a much happier person. Poor but happy…
I’ve had this project in my head for about 12 years and actually started working on it about a year and a half ago. It’s gone through many configurations in my head as to what kind of site it would be. I earn my living as a graphic designer and photographer, also, recently, I’m doing some work as a web designer. I’ve always thought a site would be a good way to let prospective clients get a feel for what I can do. As I get older, though, it’s become more important for me to say some things—I’m not exactly sure what those things are, but they will make themselves apparent—so I thought a somewhat personal web site would be more satisfying for me. What I’ve decided to do is work on the personal and let the professional take care of itself. There are a lot of things I want to show here because they mean something to me, but they also show what I can do for my clients. The web is a publishing medium and I'm just publishing some stuff that I care about, hopefully it will mean something to those who view it. This is an evolving site and we’ll all know what it is to be when it becomes that. |
